
Dr Elena Rousou
Dr Elena Rousou held since 2008 the position of Special Nursing Staff at the Nursing Department of the School of Health Sciences. She holds a diploma in General Nursing (1990), specialized in Community Nursing (2007), a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (1995), and an MSc in Healthcare Management (2009). In 2015, she obtained a doctoral degree in community – family nursing/public health. She worked as a Nursing Officer in public hospitals between 1995 – 2002, and between 2002 to 2009, she worked as a clinical instructor at the Nursing School of Cyprus. Her present teaching duties encompass laboratory instruction, clinical coordination, and delivering undergraduate courses like ‘Community Nursing,’ ‘Family Nursing,’ ‘Transcultural Nursing,’ and ‘Health Promotion.’ Additionally, she provides lectures within postgraduate programs.
Her primary research revolves around Community, Family, and Transcultural Nursing, with a specific emphasis on promoting health within vulnerable populations. In this context, she investigate disparities in health and social care, human rights, gender dynamics, and cultural factors. Through her doctoral thesis, her research began with a focus on single mothers, investigating their health status, depressive symptoms, and the role of social support. This led to a long-term interest in vulnerable populations. Over the past decade, her work has centered on enhancing healthcare for marginalized groups, rooted in human rights principles. Projects like IENE4-8 addressed transcultural nursing and the rights of migrants. In IENE9, she expanded to the LGBT+ community. The IENE10 project prepared healthcare professionals for AI interaction and in IENE 11Â on health promotion and disease prevention through community education initiatives regarding hesitancy in vaccination. She has also explored violence against women, notably through the COST Action IS1206 and FEM-United project. Additionally, through the SAVE project addressed screening for elder abuse, while through cross-border studies tackled issues like self-compassion among university students and psychological first aid for adolescents (OPEN project).
