Maria Kyranou

Maria Kyranou works in the Department of Nursing, at the Cyprus University of Technology since 2017 (currently at the rank of Assistant Professor). She completed her undergraduate studies in the Department of Nursing at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens followed by postgraduate studies (Master’s in Science) in the “Management of Health Care Services and Health Informatics”. She holds a PhD from the School of Nursing at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF), a cutting-edge institution for funding of nursing studies both in the US and worldwide. The results of her PhD research on the “Trajectories and Predictors of Self-Reported Anxiety and Depression in Women with and Without Pain Who Undergo Surgery for Breast Cancer” have been published and informed everyday clinical practice. After her PhD, she worked as a Nurse Manager at the chemotherapy unit of Papageorgiou Hospital, a large university hospital, in Thessaloniki, Greece. She established interdisciplinary teams and collaborated passionately for the implementation of evidence-based practices in the care of people faced with cancer. Her 15 years of clinical experience inspired her to found the research lab “BRIDGES” at CUT with the aim of bridging the gap between research and academic knowledge with clinical practice. She is an enthusiast for interdisciplinary efforts and has a keen interest in the spiritual practices of people with cancer and their carers during the different phases of the care continuum.
 

Her research interests fall within the sphere of the promotion of child and family health, particularly with respect to health literacy, vaccine hesitancy, antibiotic use, respectful maternal perinatal care and also the epidemiological studies related to: social support, social capital, health-related quality of life, socio-environmental health determinants, social environment, natural environment and epidemiology of chronic diseases e.g. rheumatic diseases. Her research projects and publications are focused on this field.
