BSiH Lab 2025: Advancing Behavioural Science in Health Through People, Partnerships, and Purpose

23rd December 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, the Behavioral Science in Health – BSiH Lab reflects on a year defined by scientific excellence, strong European engagement, meaningful capacity building, and a growing international footprint. Across research, education, policy, and practice, our work this year has been driven by our people,  students, early-career researchers, clinicians, educators, policymakers, and partners that have been working together to improve health through behavioural science.

People, Mentorship, and Capacity Building

Supporting early-career researchers and students remained a core priority for the BSiH Lab in 2025. During 2025 we welcomed two postdoctoral researchers who are currently working towards the labs’ activities:

Dr Veronica Hadjipanagi (PhD in Cognitive Psychology) who is working on the EU4Health-funded DESIPOC project and the ERC Vision PainAid project in collaboration with the CYENS Center of Excellence, and

Dr Maria Loizou (PhD in Clinical Psychology) who currently serves as Project Manager of the EU4Health-funded project DESIPOC, overseeing its coordination and implementation.

Throughout the year, we also welcomed and mentored three interns: Antonia Charalambous, Anna Yayloyan, and Panagiota Mastrosavvaki who contributed to ongoing research projects, dissemination activities, and stakeholder engagement across several EU-funded initiatives. Their work strengthened the lab’s research capacity while reinforcing our commitment to inclusive academic training.

The lab also celebrated significant individual achievements.

🏆 Anna Yayloyan was named a 2025 iCARE Scholar, recognising her academic excellence and leadership potential. Anna’s iCARE project is mentored by iCARE collaborator Dr Angelos Kassianos at BSiH Lab and is examining a crucial public health challenge. By using iCARE’s international dataset, she’s investigating which psychosocial, demographic, and informational factors influence vaccine hesitancy during pregnancy.

🏆 Laura Panagi, a BSiH Lab researcher, was awarded the 2025 EHPS Synergy Grant, supporting innovative participatory research approaches within health psychology. This was one of only two European Health Psychology Society (EHPS) Synergy Grants for 2025. This distinguished grant supported her participation in the SYNERGY Expert Meeting (August 24-25) and the EHPS 2025 conference (August 25-29) held in Groningen, Netherlands.

🏆 In March 2025, the BSiH Lab celebrated a major achievement as Postdoctoral Researcher Dr Pinelopi Constantinou, received the Cyprus Research Award – Young Researcher in Social Sciences 2024 at the national Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) Research Awards ceremony.

🏆 The BSiH Lab has been awarded the 2025 Chinese Ambassador Fund, recognising its efforts to strengthen Sino‑Cypriot collaboration in digital health and behavioural science. The grant, presented on 8th of December 2025 at the Limassol Municipal University Library, will support joint seminars, capacity‑building workshops, co‑design activities and panels on youth mental health and digital equity, and will help establish a long‑term collaboration between the Cyprus University of Technology and Duke Kunshan University, including a visit to China in Spring 2026.

Doctoral training remained central to our mission. In 18th of December, PhD student Stephanie Tsounta represented the lab at the CUT Department of Nursing PhD Swap & Pitch Seminar, an interactive workshop facilitated by the PhD program coordinator Dr Nicos Middleton, designed to foster peer learning, interdisciplinary dialogue, and a supportive doctoral research culture.

The seminar was followed by the annual Christmas Lunch of the Department of Nursing held this year at Miramare Hotel in Limassol.

Research Excellence and Competitive Funding

2025 was marked by major funding successes that significantly expanded the lab’s research portfolio:

  • RELIEF – Intervening Earlier in Life for Healthier Lifestyles
funded by the EU4Health Programme (2025-2028). Managed by Centre for Social Innovation,  this project focuses on reducing exposure to emerging tobacco products among school children in Cyprus, Iceland, and Spain.

EU4Health Joint Action (2025-2028) with CUT participating as partners, with local team including Ourania Kolokotroni (Local Lead), Angelos Kassianos, Nicos Middleton, Christiana Nicolaou, Elena Rousou, Koralia Michail and colleagues from the Cyprus Ministry of Health. The project officially launched at the kick-off meeting in Copenhagen (15–17 December 2025).

  • ALTHEA CY – Disease Prevention Postpartum
funded by Research and Innovation Foundation Excellence Hubs (2025-2027).
Led by Dr Angelos Kassianos as Principal Investigator, and with CUT, 3AHealth Ltd and Birth Forward as partners, ALTHEA CY held its kick-off meeting on the 10th of July 2025 and focuses on enabling social connections to support postpartum health behaviour change. CUT team includes Dr Nicos Middleton, Dr Ourania Kolokotroni and Dr Eleni Hadjigeorgiou

These projects reflect the lab’s growing leadership in behavioural prevention, cancer control, maternal health, and public health innovation.

European Networks, COST Actions, and Policy Engagement

In 2025, the BSiH Lab further strengthened its role in European research coordination through active participation in three new COST Actions:

  • CA23151 – Medi-CaSE: Mediterranean Cancer Screening and Early Diagnosis Network
Dr Angelos Kassianos serves as a Working Group Member, contributing to implementation science, data collection, and equity-focused screening strategies.
